Earnings have fallen 19.7% in the most recent quarter, but this drop is primarily due to an asset sale and plant conversion fee from a year earlier.

CANADIAN UTILITIES LTD. (Toronto symbols CU [class A non-voting] and CU.X [class B voting]; www.canadianutilities.com) distributes electricity and natural gas in Alberta and Australia. It also has 5 power plants—1 in Canada, 2 in Australia and 2 in Mexico. ATCO owns 52.2% of the company.
Starting with the March 2020 payment, Canadian Utilities will raise its quarterly dividend for investors by 3.0%. You’ll then receive $0.4354 a share instead of $0.4227. The new annual rate of $1.74 yields a high 4.5%. Canadian Utilities has raised its dividend each year since 1972.
Following a strategic review designed to increase shareholder value, Canadian Utilities recently sold its fossil fuel-based power plants in Canada for $821 million. It recorded a $139 million gain on the sale.
Canadian Utilities also sold its 80% stake in Alberta PowerLine. That joint venture recently completed a new 508-km power transmission line. Quanta Services Inc. owns the other 20%.
The buyer is a consortium led by TD Greystone Asset Management. As part of the transaction, TD Greystone sold a 40% stake in Alberta PowerLine to a group of seven Indigenous communities.
Canadian Utilities received $220 million. The buyers also assumed $1.4 billion of debt related to the joint venture. Canadian Utilities will continue to operate the line under 35-year contracts with Alberta’s power regulators.
Dividend Stocks: Earnings fall due to one-time payment last year
If you exclude unusual items, Canadian Utilities’ overall earnings in the three months ended September 30, 2019, fell 19.7%, to $106 million from $132 million a year earlier. Due to more shares outstanding, earnings per share declined at a faster rate of 20.4%, to $0.39 from $0.49. The declines are mainly because the year-earlier quarter included a $62 million payment from Alberta’s power regulators related to the conversion of a coal-fired plant to natural gas.
As a result of those sales, Canadian Utilities’ projected earnings will likely decline from $2.18 a share in 2019 to $2.11 in 2020. The stock trades at a reasonable 18.5 times the 2020 estimate.
