Next week, a U.S. district court judge will rule on this stock’s proposed merger.
The deal, which would come at a cost of over $85 billion, promises to be a tremendous spur to growth. The company would be able to multiply its customer base with a range of new services. In the meantime, the shares trade at a low 9.8 times projected earnings and yield a high 6.0%.

AT&T INC. (New York symbol T; www.att.com) is the largest wireless provider in the U.S. It also sells TV cable packages, and high-speed Internet and landline phone services.
The stock fell 5% after the company reported lower-than-expected first quarter results.
In the three months ended March 31, 2018, earnings jumped 34.4%, to $4.7 billion, or $0.75 a share, from $3.5 billion, or $0.56, a year earlier.
If you disregard unusual items, such as a gain related to its employee’s pension plan, AT&T’s earnings per share in the latest quarter rose 14.9%, to $0.85 from $0.74. That missed the consensus estimate of $0.87.
Revenue in the quarter fell 3.4%, to $38.0 billion from $39.4 billion. That also missed the consensus forecast of $39.3 billion. The company continues to add new wireless and TV subscribers. However, slowing revenue from traditional phone and TV services offset those gains.
Value Stocks: Overall, proposed deal would be worth over $107 billion
Meantime, the company continues to defend its planned acquisition of Time Warner Inc. (New York symbol TWX). Access to Time Warner content should help AT&T attract more users to its wireless and TV services.
However, the U.S. Department of Justice launched a lawsuit to block the deal. It claims the merger would let AT&T unfairly increase the prices rival TV networks pay to access Time Warner programming. The companies pushed back the termination date of their deal to June 21, 2018 at the suggestion of the district judge presiding in the case. The judge has said he will hand down his decision by June 12.
If AT&T wins the case, it will pay $85.4 billion (50% in cash and 50% in shares) for Time Warner. If you include Time Warner’s debt, the total value of the takeover is $108.7 billion.
In the meantime, the company has postponed its plan to sell shares in its Latin American DirecTV (satellite television) business through an initial public offering (IPO).
Called Vrio Corp. (New York symbol VRIO), this unit draws 13.6 million subscribers from 11 countries in South America (8) and the Caribbean (3).
The postponement is probably due to tepid investor interest in the new shares. Recent media reports suggest AT&T planned to cut both the number of Vrio shares it would sell, and the offering price.
With the February 2018 payment, the company raised its quarterly dividend by 2.0%. Investors now receive $0.50 a share, up from $0.49. The new annual rate of $2.00 yields a high 6.0%. AT&T has raised the annual payment for 34 consecutive years. AT&T has increased its dividend by an average of 2.1% annually over the last 5 years.
As the company awaits the decision on its merger with Time Warner, the shares are trading at a low 9.8 times its forecast 2018 earnings of $3.40 a share.
