Although I find Pat McKeough’s advice to be very informative and reliable, I cannot totally agree with today’s theme. Yes, Stock Market Speculation is normally not for the faint-at-heart. However, I have found that, overall, selling Covered Calls, has proved to a successful strategy for me. An unsolicited promoter, once asked me what investment strategy I used, because I told him that I was not interested in his sales pitch. When I replied that I often use selling Covered Calls, his reply was “that is the slow way to become rich”. For the most part (90% of the time), I am a Buy and Hold investor of quality dividend paying securities: granted I may lose a bit on surging values of stocks, but, any declines are somewhat muted by the Call value. Any comments would be appreciated. Thank you.

Earl, thanks for sharing your experience with covered calls. We will, however, stick with our well-established guidance. In the long run, options trading is what mathematicians refer to as a “negative-sum game”: one player’s gain is less than another’s loss, because their gain is minus commissions and other costs. If you must trade options, do so as little as possible.
