An income fund is an ETF (exchange traded fund) or mutual fund that aims to generate income for its unitholders. This additional income typically comes from dividend payments, but it can also come from bond interest. Dividends are generally more dependable than capital gains as a source of investment income. You can improve your investment safety by focusing on stocks-or ETFs and mutual funds-with long histories of dividends. Picking a high quality income fund can help supply a significant percentage of your total return portfolio returns. But even if you don't need current income from your portfolio, you still may want to invest in income funds. When you pick the best income funds, you are, for the most part, investing in well-established, blue-chip companies. That's in large part because of the dividends that the best income funds pay. Dividends, after all, are much more stable than earnings projections. More important, dividends are impossible to fake-either the company has the cash to pay dividends or it doesn't. Income funds are also worth considering for those investors looking to add to their retirement income. Not all income funds are created equal, so invest in funds that have a history of increasing or maintaining their dividends and ones that have a reasonable dividend yield. Note that when a dividend yield is too high, it can be a danger sign. It could mean that the fund price has dropped because investors anticipate an upcoming dividend cut.
