AQN sharpens its focus

ALGONQUIN POWER & UTILITIES, $6.53, is a buy. The utility (Toronto symbol AQN; Shares o/s: 767.2 million; Market cap: $4.9 billion; TSINetwork Rating: Extra Risk; Yield: 4.0%; www.algonquinpower.com) has now completed the sale of its 42.2% ownership stake in Atlantica Sustainable Infrastructure plc for $1.08 billion (all figures except share price and market cap in U.S. dollars). Algonquin also recently sold its non-regulated renewable energy business to LS Power for up to $2.5 billion. The company will use that cash to pay down its long-term debt of $7.22 billion (as of September 30, 2024). That’s equal to 147% of its market cap. Algonquin now focuses entirely on its regulated utilities, which supply electricity, gas, water distribution and wastewater collection services to 3.15 million customers in Canada, the U.S., Chile and Bermuda.
