In the past two years, AT&T and Verizon have shed their media and other businesses. That will let them focus on their main telecommunications operations, particularly as each of the companies rolls out its new, ultrafast 5G wireless networks.
So far, 5G users generate higher revenue than their current cellphone customers. That revenue should continue to rise as more users switch to 5G. The higher revenue will also let them maintain their high dividend payouts.
AT&T INC. $20 is a buy. The company (New York symbol T; Income Portfolio, Utilities sector; Shares outstanding: 7.2 billion; Market cap: $144.0 billion; Price-to-sales ratio: 0.9; Dividend yield: 5.6%; TSINetwork Rating: Average; www.att.com) is the largest wireless (cellphone) carrier in the U.S., with 196.6 million subscribers.
AT&T also has 6.6 million traditional phone customers (in 13 states) and 14.1 million high-speed Internet users. As well, AT&T sells wireless services to 20.5 million users in Mexico.
