Nokia Corporation (ADR), $3.58, symbol NOK on New York (Shares outstanding: 3.7 billion; Market cap: $14.2 billion; www.nokia.com), is the world’s second-largest cellphone maker. The company also develops and manufactures telecommunications and networking systems. Nokia’s current CEO, Stephen Elop, took over in September 2010. He aims to turn around the struggling company, which continues to lose market share in mobile phones to Apple’s iPhone and devices powered by the Google Android operating system. His initiatives include teaming up with Microsoft to develop smartphones based on the Windows Phone platform. The company has long-term potential, but in the near term, its sales and profit outlook is far from certain. A lot will depend on ongoing consumer response to its new smartphones. The two newest Lumia devices, the 920 and 820, are the first to feature the Windows Phone 8 operating system, which aims to emerge as a legitimate rival to iPhone and Android.
