A: Electrovaya Inc., $3.06, symbol EFL on Toronto (Shares outstanding: 85.5 million; Market cap: $256.4 million; www.electrovaya.com), has developed “SuperPolymer” lithium-ion battery technology. The company believes that these thin, lightweight batteries carry more energy than other rechargeable batteries of the same size.
Electrovaya began operating in September 1996. It first applied its technology to batteries for portable computers and similar devices. It also developed a tablet computer with an LCD screen that users could write on with a stylus pen.
In 2002, the company switched its focus to developing batteries for hybrid and electric-powered vehicles. In addition, Electrovaya is developing batteries that aim to store electricity for power companies. Storing electricity for later use would make solar and wind energy more economically feasible, and reduce or eliminate the current need for government subsidies.
