Brookfield Residential Properties Inc., $22.42, symbol BRP on Toronto (Shares outstanding: 118.4 million; Market cap: $2.7 billion; www.brookfieldrp.com), is a leading North American land developer and homebuilder, with operations in 11 major markets.
The company buys and develops land for planned communities. It then provides lots to its own homebuilding division and sells them to outside builders. In addition, Brookfield participates in real estate investments, including mixed-use developments, infrastructure projects and joint ventures.
In the three months ended March 31, 2013, Brookfield earned $0.04 a share, compared to nil a year ago. Revenue rose 29.4%, to $171 million from $132.1 million. Better housing markets were the main reason for the increases.
Brookfield makes most of its profits in the fourth quarter of each year: it made $0.92 a share in all of 2012.
The stock began trading in March 2011, after Brookfield Homes combined with Brookfield Properties’ North American residential land and housing division to form a new corporation.
