Hi Pat: There seem to be some interesting developments in near field communications (NFC) technology, but the market hasn’t been especially kind to some of the main players of late. I’m wondering what you think of two possible investments in this market: Broadcom and NXP Semiconductors. Your thoughts? Thanks much.

Near field communications (NFC) technology allows for the secure transmission of data, including financial transactions, between devices that are close to one another. This technology also allows for enhanced use of Wi-Fi, which lets devices connect wirelessly over a local area network. Broadcom, $29.46, symbol BRCM on Nasdaq (Shares outstanding: 558.0 million; Market cap: $16.4 billion; www.broadcom.com), develops computer chips that enable both wireless and wired broadband digital data transmission for residential and business uses. This includes chips for cable-TV set-top boxes, cable modems, high-speed networks, direct satellite and land-based digital broadcast, cellular phones, GPS devices and Blue-ray Disk players. Broadcom sees a bright future for near field communications and believes it could eventually be as common as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. In September 2011, the company introduced a new line of NFC chips.
