Cheniere Energy, $25.55, symbol LNG on New York (Shares outstanding: 241.3 million; Market cap: $6.2 billion; www.cheniere.com), builds, owns and operates onshore liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals and gas pipelines on the U.S. Gulf Coast. The company was the first U.S. firm to get regulatory approval to ship LNG. Cheniere owns and operates the Sabine Pass LNG receiving terminal in Louisiana. This facility can convert up to 4.0 billion cubic feet of LNG to gas per day, and store a total of 16.9 billion cubic feet equivalent of LNG. The company now plans to reconfigure Sabine Pass so it can liquefy gas for export. The project will cost more than $5.7 billion, but exports could start as soon as 2015. However, Sabine Pass’s construction and start-up involves risks, and its success also depends on continued strength in LNG prices. Cheniere Energy is okay to hold, but only for aggressive investors.
