Lustros, $0.78, symbol LSTS on the U.S. over-the-counter bulletin board (Shares outstanding: 62.9 million; Market cap: $49.1 million, www.lustros.com), aims to start making food-grade copper sulfate. When added to feed, this substance stimulates growth in pigs and chickens. The company plans to get the copper from the tailings (waste products) of closed mines. Copper sulfate, also known as blue stone or blue vitriol, is produced commercially by reacting copper with sulfuric acid. It has a wide range of applications beyond animal feed. For example, it is used as a fungicide in agriculture and to control fungal infections in humans. In pyrotechnics, it creates blue fireworks. Other uses include treating leather and electroplating (or the coating of an object with a metal to change its characteristics). Historically, it has been used to dye textiles.
