Westport Innovations, $20.74, symbol WPT on Toronto (Shares outstanding: 62.7 million; Market cap: $1.3 billion; www.westport.com), develops technology that lets engines operate on gaseous fuels, such as natural gas or hydrogen. The company also has a 50/50 joint venture with Cummins Inc. (symbol CMI on New York) called Cummins Westport Inc. The partnership sells a range of low-emission alternative-fuel engines for medium-duty trucks. In the nine months ended September 30, 2013, Westport’s revenue fell 3.7%, to $111.4 million from $115.7 million a year earlier (all figures except share price and market cap in U.S. dollars). The company lost $96.0 million, or $1.72 a share, compared to a loss of $61.2 million, or $1.14. Westport’s shares are down from their all-time high of $49.68 in March 2012. However, that still gives the company a very high market capitalization (or the value of all its outstanding shares) of $1.3 billion.
