A: Berkshire Hathaway, $201.40, symbol BRK.B on New York (Shares outstanding: 2.1 billion; Market cap: $497.3 billion; www.berkshirehathaway.com), is an investment company. Its core business is insurance, but it also invests in a wide range of other industries such as railroads, utilities, energy production and finance.
Unlike many holding companies, Berkshire Hathaway trades at a premium to its net asset value. This reflects the superb investment record of its chairman and CEO, celebrated investor Warren Buffett, who reached the age of 88 last August. When he dies, or if he becomes incapacitated, the stock is vulnerable to a sudden and severe downturn.
