BIRKENSTOCK HOLDING LIMITED, $49.48, symbol BIRK on New York, is an iconic German footwear maker whose history dates back to 1774. The first Birkenstock sandal was created by Karl Birkenstock in 1963. Karl was the great-great-grandson of founder Johann Adam Birkenstock. California dressmaker Margo Fraser brought the sandals to the U.S. in 1966. Notably they got their “hippie” reputation because health food stores were the only places that initially would sell them. Birkenstock went public on October 10, 2023, selling 32.3 million shares of its stock at $46. Of the shares sold, 21.5 million were from existing shareholders. The company didn’t receive any of the proceeds from those shares. Birkenstock itself sold 10.8 million shares to raise $495 million. The company’s push to go public was likely accelerated by the success of the “Barbie” movie.
