HEWLETT-PACKARD ENTERPRISE CO., $14.71, New York symbol HPE, sells computing services and products, such as servers and analytics software, to businesses and governments. On November 1, 2015, the old Hewlett-Packard Co. split into two firms: HP Enterprise and HP Inc. Hewlett-Packard shareholders received one share of HP Enterprise and one share of HP Inc. for each old share they held. Investors will only be liable for capital gains taxes when they sell their new shares. In its fiscal 2018 fourth quarter, ended October 31, 2018, HP Enterprise’s earnings soared 40.6%, to $665 million from $473 million a year earlier. Per-share earnings jumped 55.2%, to $0.45 from $0.29, on fewer shares outstanding. Those figures exclude several unusual items, mainly costs related to the sale of businesses. Among those businesses is the spinoff of the company’s software unit to U.K.-based Micro Focus International plc on September 1, 2017.
