People generally, but investors particularly, often seem to take Donald Trump’s spoken words too seriously. For instance, Trump may say things that some people might take as veiled threats, like Vladimir Putin’s references to his stockpile of tactical nuclear weapons. My view: if you’re going to listen to unsettling talk from powerful world leaders, it pays to think before you act. You can take Putin’s nukes and Trump’s tariffs as possibilities or declarations, depending on your mindset. Just keep in mind that it’s safer and easier to undo the threat of a tariff than to re-call a nuke after a launch. I suspect that tariffs are just one financial device that Trump wants to use, for as long as it suits him, as an off-and-on negotiating tool. Tariffs have been used against the U.S. many times in history. I’m sure Trump and his advisors have spent a lot of time in recent months to see how well they served past users. We’ll come back…
