In recent Inner Circles and Quarterly Client Letters, we’ve noted that good and bad changes have taken place lately in law and politics, in the U.S. and around the world. In my view, a good change took place in Canada in the first week of 2025, when Prime Minister Trudeau decided to step down as leader of Canada’s Liberal party. Odd coincidence: Prime Minister Trudeau and President Biden, though far apart in age, have some things in common. To start, both owe their political success, at least in part, to connections with previous leaders. Biden served as President Obama’s Vice President. Prime Minister Trudeau’s father, Pierre Elliott Trudeau, served as Canada’s Prime Minister from 1968 to 1979 and from 1980 to 1984. From the late 1960s through until the mid-1980s, the elder Trudeau’s personality dominated Canadian politics. You could also say something like that about President Obama.
