Newmont plans to make a bid

NEWMONT MINING $34.59 (New York symbol NEM; Shares outstanding: 530.6 million; Market cap: $18.2 billion; TSINetwork Rating: Average; Dividend yield: 0.3%; www.newmont.com) is one of the world’s largest gold and copper producers. Its major mines are in the U.S., Peru, Suriname, Ghana and Australia. Among those properties is the Kalgoorlie open-pit facility in Australia. The company owns 50% of the gold mine and operates it. Barrick Gold Corp. (New York symbol ABX) owns the other 50%. Barrick now wants to sell its interest in the operation through an auction process. Newmont plans to bid. Buying the remaining half of Kalgoorlie could cost the company up to $1.5 billion. To put that in context, Newmont earned $413 million, or $0.78 a share, in the first six months of 2016.
